After spending quite a bit of time collaborating with teachers and Mr. Simington about what advisory period will look like this year, we finally have a plan! The first thing was determining the goal of advisory...the WHY. Next it was figuring out the best way to accomplish the goal in the amount of time we have (20 min per day) and trying to make sure it will seem worthwhile to students and their advisors.

During my first two weeks of 3-5th grade SEL classroom lessons, I introduced myself and reviewed my role as the school counselor. I also explained we would be learning about mindfulness in the coming weeks. I showed the students a simple mindful exercise they can use called "Take 5". We discussed how it can be used to help calm down and relax if you're mad or sad because that's when people sometimes make poor choices. We also discussed using it at night when their little minds are running a mile a minute but they are supposed to be calming down and going to sleep. http://blissfulkids.com/mindfulness-for-children-take-five-exercise/ This Take 5 Breathing Exercise is a wonderful way to switch off the stress response. It brings the body back into balance, slowing and deepening the breath and slowing down the heart rate, while harnessing the need to move with an action that requires focus and provides sensory feedback to our brains. Best of all, Take 5 Breathing is simple, enjoyable, free, and you can use it anywhere, anytime. What is Take 5 Breathing? During take 5 breathing, children concentrate on taking five slow breaths in through their nose and out through their mouths. Children may need to practice this first as they may be mouth breathing. If you notice that your child finds breathing through their nose a challenge, invite them to imagine they are smelling a beautiful flower or their favourite food as they breathe in, and then to breathe out with a big sigh. (Breathing in and smelling a beautiful smell and breathing out with a sigh because it smelt so good.) I hope the kiddos will "take 5" whenever they feel it will help, and remember this isn't just for kids- it's beneficial for adults as well!
